It's been a month and a few days since Microsoft officially released the latest version of Windows, Windows 10, and I've discovered that many people delay upgrading not because they don't like the operating system, but because they're waiting for Microsoft. fixes. some known problems. I've been using this monster OS for a month today, I've come up with solutions to your fears so you can enjoy this monster with me (especially if you're still using it). use that wonderful window
1. WINDOWS AUTO UPDATE (SET TO CREATE VERSION)
This is clearly at the top of the "why you shouldn't upgrade to Windows 10" list found on many websites. Here's how to disable it. (The only problem is that it doesn't work on the Home version, but all the other versions work fine). I will edit to add tips for Home version users later
To turn off automatic updates; press Windows key + R, type "gpedit.msc" and press Enter, navigate to
Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Update. Find the "Configure automatic updates" setting in the right pane and double-click it. Set it to "Enabled" and choose your preferred setting. Save changes. PS: Windows Update seems to notice the change after clicking "Check for updates"
2. SEARCH RESULTS FROM C drive ONLY (FIXED)
In this new version of Windows, Microsoft has introduced Cortana personal assistant which also acts as local/web search for your PC. The problem is that Cortana only searches stuff on the drive where you installed Windows, usually the C: drive. People with one partition won't notice this problem, but it's a nightmare for people with two or more partitions like me, knowing I can't see the file I'm looking for in drive D:
How to solve this problem; Go to control panel (right click on windows icon) - Indexing Options - edit - [select the drive(s) you want Cortana to search] - OK
If the drive has been indexed before, select it in the bottom pane, click OK -- Advanced -- Rebuild
Then wait for it to index the files in the drive. When it's over, Cortana can now see them
3. Default SEARCH IN EDGE Browser
Along with the new Windows, Microsoft has launched a brand new browser called Edge. I used to be a huge fan of Firefox, but after this update, I can't live without Microsoft Edge. There are a lot of new features that you will really enjoy in this browser, but the only downside is that the default search engine is Bing (since many of us are more than satisfied with Google). Here's how to change it to Google. First go to Google.com from the address bar then click the three dots on the top right (just below the close icon) then click settings then click "show settings" advanced setting". Scroll down to "search address bar with" and click the box. If you go to the Google website, it will appear there, then select it
4. BACK TO YOUR FAVORITE
This option is only available to those who have upgraded from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. If you did a clean install, skip this number. For some reason you might want to go back to your old windows. Microsoft has prepared a downgrade tool for you. Just click on the Windows icon and in the start screen click on settings then update and security and click on recovery in the left pane. Depending on your old version of Windows, you should see "Go back to Windows 8.1 (or 7)"
Note that this feature is only available for a month because Microsoft deletes your "windows.old" folder after a month, so you obviously have a month to decide if you want to continue using Windows 10 or not. Are not.
5. CORTANA SEARCH BAR ON TASKBAR
This is one of the first things you notice right after upgrading to Windows 10. The Cortana search bar on the taskbar may be interesting for some people but useless for others. Here's a quick way to hide it or turn it into a Cortana icon. Right click on the bar and select "search" (if you have Cortana enabled you will see Cortana instead of search), then in the submenu click "Show search as icon" or "hide" .
6. SCREEN DRIVERS PROBLEM (SCREEN BRIGHTNESS IS NOT WORKING OR SLEEP IS LAUNCHED)
This problem occurs because during the update process, Microsoft uninstalls your display driver and installs the base graphics card for you.
The solution is to reinstall your display driver. You can do it either
first. check windows update and update your system
2. Go to device manager and right click on display driver and update via internet
3. Download driverpack solution or any driver installation software
7. VERY QUICK BATTERY (FIXED. FIRST GENERATION PROCESSORS ONLY affected)
Unfortunately, this issue is still not fully resolved, but Microsoft and Intel are working hard to resolve the issue. It's been restored on some processors, so keep updating your windows, yours might be the next one.
8. CUTTING DATA
Windows 10 is known to be a data vampire. For a solution, see my dedicated thread on how to save data on Windows 10
